The importance of mental health is unquestionable, and being aware of it is the best way to protect and nurture yourself and improve your wellbeing. So how can you achieve personal benefits like better focus and concentration, improved self-awareness and self-esteem, lower levels of stress and anxiety, etc? The answer is simple – meditation. Meditation is becoming more and more popular across the world. Its benefits for general health, mental wellbeing and professional performance are numerous. But it is not something new. As described by the Mayo Clinic, meditation has been practiced for thousands of years.
Meditation originally was meant to help deepen understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life. These days, meditation is commonly used for relaxation and stress reduction. It is considered a type of mind-body complementary medicine. It can produce a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind. During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. This process may result in enhanced physical and emotional well-being. Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that can benefit both your emotional well-being and your overall health. And these benefits don’t end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help carry you more calmly through your day and may help you manage symptoms of certain medical conditions. The emotional benefits of meditation can include:
- Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
- Building skills to manage your stress
- Increasing self-awareness
- Focusing on the present
- Reducing negative emotions
- Increasing imagination and creativity
- Increasing patience and tolerance
A lot of people believe meditating is not easy. Furthermore, often they do not have the time for specific online or in-person classes s0 they give up on the idea. Therefore, we are happy to present to you Calm, a meditation, sleep and relaxation app, available in both the App Store and Google Play store. Launched in 2012 by Alex Tew and Michael Acton Smith, Calm was named by Apple as the 2017 iPhone App of the Year; by Google Play as an “Editors’ Choice” in 2018; and found by a major study of 200,000 iPhone users to be “the world’s happiest app” – the single app that left users feeling happiest from spending time on it.
Meditation masterclass in your pocket
Calm creates unique audio content that strengthens mental fitness and tackles some of the biggest mental health challenges of today: stress, anxiety, insomnia, and depression. The most popular feature on Calm is a 10-minute meditation called, ‘The Daily Calm,’ that explores a fresh mindful theme and inspiring concept each day. Calm also contains some 100 Sleep Stories (bed-time stories for grown-ups), plus sleep music, meditation lessons, nature sounds, Calm Masterclasses delivered by world experts, and more. The Calm app is free to download and some free content is available, but a paid subscription to Calm Premium unlocks access to Calm’s entire content library.
Once you launch the app, you’re immediately guided to relax and take a few deep breaths. Then, you have to select a few goals (e.g. better sleep, reduce anxiety, etc.) so the app can tailor recommendations based on your objectives. Once you enter the app, everything is organized in different categories like Focus, Stress and Anxiety with options to initiate guided and unguided meditation sessions. Here is an example of the content that can be found within the app:
We’re the #1 app for Sleep, Meditation and Relaxation, with over 100 million downloads and over 1.5M+ 5-star reviews. – Calm team
Does meditation have medically-proven benefits? Yes. Does the app really help us from a medical point of view? Well, numerous studies have been conducted and for example, this 2019 study of 153 adults showed that mindfulness training done through a meditation app for two weeks reduced loneliness and increased social contact for its users compared with those in a control group. Meditation takes practice but you have to start somewhere. You also have to experiment to find out what kind of audio content do you enjoy listening to and what types of meditation work best for you. With Calm, you will be able to make the first step towards mental wellbeing, deeper sleep, happier life, and better overall performance at work and in daily life.
